(Publ. 7 DEC 2018) 1 240 000 design applications were filed worldwide in 2017. This, according to statistics from WIPO.

Notable in the statistics is that 628 658 of these applications, or 50.6%, were filed in China at the Chinese IP office, SIPO. In second place on the list of applications received, was EUIPO (111 021 applications) and third was the Korean KIPO (67 357 applications). The American USPTO received 45 881 applications and thus ended up in fifth place on the list.

All Asian IP offices accumulated, received two thirds of all the design applications filed worldwide in 2017.

Out of these 1.24 million applications, 10% were concerning furnishings, 8.5% clothing and 7.2% packaging and containers.
