(Publ. 24 OCT 2013) ICANN has just announced that the first new generic top level domains have been delegated. This means that they have passed all tests and are now part of the domain name system, together with TLDs like .COM, .NET, .EU and .SE. The four new gTLDs are:

In a press release Akram Atallah, ICANN, predicts that “in the weeks and months ahead, we will see new domain names coming online from all corners of the world, bringing people, communities and businesses together in ways we never imagined. It’s this type of innovation that will continue to drive our global society.” Each launch of a new gTLD starts with a Sunrise and a Trademark Claims period during which only those trademark owners who have registered their trademarks with the Trademark Clearinghouse can participate.
