(Publ. 14 APR 2019) On March 17th, Canada joined the Madrid Protocol, becoming the 104th member of the Madrid System. The treaty for Canada will enter into force on June 17th, 2019.
The Madrid system (Madrid Protocol) for the international registration of trademarks is the primary international system for facilitating the registration of trademarks in multiple jurisdictions around the world. Today, there are 91 members including the EU. The advantage of this system is that it is possible to apply for trademark protection through one administrative process which is also more cost-effective.
