(Publ. 23 JAN 2018) During the first half of 2017, Facebook received a total of 377,399 complaints of copyright infringement, trademark infringement and counterfeit on Facebook and Instagram. 66% of these complaints resulted in an action, which affected almost three million posts. This is according to Facebook’s own transparency report for the first half of 2017.
For many years, Facebook has written and published a biannual Transparency Report on government requests. Since the end of last year, this report now also includes information on intellectual property rights and infringements into the same. These new numbers indicate the amount of complaints, actions taken, and content affected by an action, for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and counterfeit on both Facebook and Instagram.
The Transparency Report shows that 377,399 complaints of copyright infringement, trademark infringement and counterfeit were submitted during the first half of 2017. 74% (280,597) of the complaints concerned Facebook and 26% (96,802) concerned Instagram. Out of these 377,399 complaints, 66% resulted in an action, and these actions affected 2,978,604 content posts, such as posts, videos and ads, on the two platforms. Facebook and Instagram was most inclined to take actions on counterfeit complaints (83%), followed by copyright infringement (66%) and trademark infringement (48%).
